CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer notched its second win in as many matches with a 1-0 decision over Temple in its home American Athletic Conference opener at Gettler Stadium.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 3-7 on the season and evened up at 1-1 in the AAC. Meanwhile, the Owls fell to 3-5-2 overall and also moved to 1-1 in the league.
UC got ahead early for the second-consecutive match when junior transfer forward Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point) found the back of the net during the sixth minute off of an assist from Cameron Panley (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice).
Equipped with an early advantage, the Red & Black did not take its foot off the gas and challenged the TU defense with four shots, including a pair on goal, in the first half. UC's defense was also strong, led by goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) who had a save in the opening period. The Bearcats proceeded to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, UC tried to maintain possession as it clung to a 1-0 cushion. Continuing to limit the Temple offensive attack, the Bearcats were also searching for an insurance goal to extend their lead. Down the stretch, the Red & Black was able to keep control of the ball as the visitors searched for the equalizer. UC's efforts proved fruitful in the end as it was able to keep the Owls off the scoreboard to record a 1-0 victory.
The Epps effect continued Saturday with the newcomer's speed causing the opposing defense problems. Off of a clear from Panley minutes into the match, Epps tracked the ball down just outside the box and raced forward to an open look at the net for the score. Epps' score marked three goals in just 56 minutes of play dating back to his two-goal performance Wednesday against IUPUI.
The Bearcats totaled seven shots on the night with three on goal. Moritz Schaller (Austria/Vienna University) and Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) both had tries on target. UC also had three corner kicks. Panley's helper was the first of his career.
