CINCINNATI – Battling back from an early deficit, University of Cincinnati men's soccer's comeback hopes were dashed on Monday in a 3-2 loss to visiting Wright State at Gettler Stadium.
UC (1-3-0) fell behind midway through the opening half on a Raiders goal in the 20th minute. UC proceeded to answer the bell late in the first half with a score by Mohamed Elmardi (Khartoum, Sudan/Lakota East) during the 36th minute to even the score at one.
With the match tied, WSU (3-0-1) tallied back-to-back goals in the 53rd and 57th minutes to push ahead, 3-1. Facing a multi-score deficit late in the match, the Bearcats did not go away lightly and pulled within a goal in the 71st minute on a goal by Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy). Searching for the equalizer in the final minutes, the Red & Black could not muster up enough of an offensive attack as the Raiders held on to come away with the victory, 3-2.
Elmardi's first-career score came off of a beautiful corner kick by Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State College) which led to a deposited header for UC's first goal of the night. Mowery, too, tallied the first goal of his career in a similar fashion with a header score off of a Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) corner kick.
The Red & Black's offense was aggressive on the night with 10 shots, including four on goal. UC also totaled a game-high six corner kicks. Clarke and Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) led the way with three shots apiece. Goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) saved four shots during the match.
