CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer suffered a 3-1 defeat to the hosting Xavier Musketeers on Friday at the XU Soccer Complex.
Battling through wet conditions, UC (1-4-0) gave up an early goal in the opening minutes of the game, but hunkered down over the duration of the first half to take just a 1-0 deficit into halftime.
UC leveled the match 10 minutes into the second half on a goal by Aerin West (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) – the Musketeers' first allowed goal of the season and West's first score of the year. After back-and-forth competition for the next 20-plus minutes, XU (2-0-2) got the edge on a score in the 79th minute. With the Red & Black searching for the equalizer late, the home team separated itself with a goal during the 87th minute. With just minutes left in regulation, the Bearcats were unable to make up ground and dropped a 3-1 decision in full time.
The Bearcats were aggressive offensively in the first half with five shots, including three on goal, but just weren't able to cash in with the equalizer. In the second half, West corralled the loose ball in the box off of a Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State College) corner kick to tie the match in the 55th minute. In total in the final period, UC, again, had five shots with three on goal. For the match, Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) led the way with a pair of tries on goal. Goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) had three saves on the night.
