University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) carded a final-round 3-under par 69 to tie for third place at 5-under 74-68-69=211 Sunday at the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C.
In recording his ninth career Top-5 result, Squires posted eight birdies, including five in a row to start his round on the front nine. He finished 5-under on the front nine before recording a 2-over on the challenging back nine, with bogeys on holes 17 and 18. In all, Squires registered an eagle, 14 birdies and 28 par scores over three rounds at the 75-player event.
UC freshman Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) showed more steady play Sunday with 13 par scores and a birdie. A pair of bogies and a double bogey on the back nine pushed his round to 2-over 74 to finish tied for 17th at even par 71-71-74=216. He completed his first collegiate event with an eagle, four birdies and 25 par scores.
Like Squires, redshirt freshman Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) also carded a below par final round Sunday, posting a 1-under 71 to complete his first college tournament tied for 23rd place at 2-over 74-73-71=218. After five par scores to start his round, Lenhart strung together four consecutive birdies on holes six through nine to make the turn at 4-under. A pair of bogies and a double bogey on the back nine slowed his momentum.
Other Bearcats scorers included senior Paul Huber (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic HS), who moved up 14 places to tie for 41st at 8-over 78-74-72=224 and sophomore Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian HS), who is tied for 58th place at 15-over 75-74-82=231.
Florida State's John Pak won medalist honors after leading the event from start to finish. He shot a tournament record 10-under 62 in the first round and went on to post a 13-under 62-69-72=203.
Cincinnati's fast team start helped it climb as high as second in the team standing near the turn on Sunday before it battled the more difficult holes on the back nine. The Bearcats finished fifth at 2-over 294-286-286=866 in a strong field that features six NCAA tournament teams from a year ago and three squads – No. 18 Duke, No. 22 North Carolina and No. 25 Florida State – listed in the Buschnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Penn State claimed the team title at 12-under 278-287-287=852. Duke (10-under 288-286-280=854) and North Carolina (10-under 280-286-288=854) tied for second place while Florida State (4-under 287-288-285=860) took fourth.
// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On the team's performance:
"We got off to an unbelievable start, playing 12-under on the front nine as a team. The back nine played very difficult today and we didn't execute down the stretch. Austin got off to a great start with birdies on each of the first five holes while Mason birdied each of the last four holes on the front nine. The great start today showed the team what we're capable of doing.
"I thought coming into this tournament we'd have to play extremely well to finish in the Top 5. We were in some good company with six teams that played in the NCAA tournament and three ranked in the preseason Top 25. What a great way to start off the season."
On the play of Austin Squires:
"I can't think of a better way for Austin to start his senior season than finishing in the Top 5 against this field. He is an explosive player who has matured so much. His patience is at a great level."
On Sam Jean and Mason Lenhart playing in their first collegiate tournament:
"I'm very pleased with how they handled themselves. You naturally battle being nervous and excited in anticipation of your first event but both managed their emotions extremely well."
