Rainy conditions in Choudrant, La., canceled the final round of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate Tuesday resulting in University of Cincinnati Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian HS) earning his best collegiate finish, tying for fourth place at 5-under 67-72=139.
Osterburg carded a career-best 5-under par 67 in Monday's morning round with a bogey free round featuring a trio of birdies, 14 par scores and an eagle on the ninth hole. He eagled the ninth hole again to highlight his effort in the second round that also included a couple of birdies and 11 par scores.
Osterburg finished four strokes behind tournament medalist William Walker III of UAB, who carded a 9-under 67-68=135.
Fellow Bearcats senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) and redshirt freshman Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham), tied for 16th place at even par 144.
Squires' opening round included a pair of birdies, 15 par scores and a lone bogey for 1-under 71. Four bogeys over an eight-hole stretch put Squires at 3-over through 13 holes in the second round before the senior posted back-to-back birdies and holes 15 and 16 that led to his 1-over 73.
Lenhart posted a steady even par 72 in the morning as a couple of birdies on the front nine offset a pair of bogeys on the back nine. He started slow in the afternoon with three consecutive bogies early but managed to shoot even par thanks to four birdies later in the round, including two in his last four holes.
In their final tournament of the fall season the Bearcats finished third in the 15-team field at 4-over 287-293=580. UAB won the team title, shooting a 20-under 278-278=556. Georgia took second at 18-under 278-280=556.
UC sophomore Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier High School), tied for 20th place at 1-over 74-71=145 in his first tournament of the fall season. He was playing the event as an individual. Freshman Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) is tied for 61st place at 9-over 77-76=153. Senior Paul Huber (Edgewood, Ky.,/Covington Catholic HS) is 76th at 14-over 78-80=158.
// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On the fall season overall:
"I thought our fall season was great. Clearly we were disappointed that rain canceled both the Bearcat Invitational in September and the final round here today. We had a lot of players contribute."
On the results from the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate:
"I'm really happy for Nicolas Osterburg getting the first Top 5 finish of his career this week. It was big for him and should boost his confidence."
"As a team it wasn't the finish we wanted but at the same time you have to be happy when you end up in the Top 3. It should solidify us as a Top 50 program when the ranking for the fall are released."
