CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati football head coach Luke Fickell was tabbed for the 2018 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list on Wednesday.

Fickell, in his second year at UC, is one of 20 coaches on the watch list.

The No. 20/21 Bearcats (6-0, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) are off to their best start since 2009 and are defeating opponents by an average of 24.7 ppl, which includes home wins over Alabama A&M, Ohio and Tulane and road triumphs at UCLA, Miami (OH) and UConn.

UC leads the nation in team passing efficiency defense and ranks in the NCAA FBS Top-20 in scoring defense (3), total defense (4), first downs defense (t-5), net punting (8), passing yards allowed (8), 4th down conversion percentage defense (9), 3rd down conversion percentage defense (10), rushing offense (10) and time of possession (19).

Since 1986, the Bryant Awards have raised more than $8.5 million to fund American Heart Association research, advocacy and educational programs across the country aimed at the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Prior to his death of a heart attack in 1983, "Bear" always talked about being bigger than something other than himself and the Bryant Award offers an opportunity to do just that – to be a part of Team Bryant in the fight against cardiovascular diseases.

Now in its 33rd year, the Bear Bryant award recognizes the country's top college football coaches for their contributions both on and off the field. The Coach of the Year Award is the only college coaching honor selected after all bowl games have concluded and is voted on by the National Sports Media Association.

Bryant, the winningest coach in college football history, retired in 1983, but died of a heart attack just 28 days after coaching his last football game. His family reached out to the AHA to create this lasting tribute that recognizes top college football coaches and supports the fight against heart disease and stroke.

UC returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Temple. The Bearcats and Owls kickoff at noon from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The game will air nationally on ESPNU, the ESPN app and via radio on 700 WLW AM in Cincinnati, XM 387 and Sirius XM Internet 979.
