DALLAS – University of Cincinnati men's soccer fell by a score of 3-1 Saturday night to the SMU Mustangs at Westcott Field.
With the loss, the Bearcats dropped to 3-11-1 on the season and 1-4-0 in American Athletic Conference play. SMU moved to 7-4-2 in 2018 and 3-1-1 in The American.
Mohamed Elmardi (Khartoum, Sudan/Lakota East) scored the lone UC goal with a score during the 39th minute. Goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) recorded a season-best seven saves.
The Red & Black fell behind early when it was whistled for a foul in the box which the Mustangs subsequently turned into in a penalty-kick conversion to pull ahead 1-0 in the 17th minute. SMU added to its lead minutes later when it scored during the 23rd minute to go up 2-0.
UC kept fighting over the duration of the first half, highlighted by a goal by Elmardi in the 39th minute to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the home team at halftime.
With the Bearcats aiming to even the match in the second half, SMU added an insurance goal in the 66th minute to give it a 3-1 cushion. Facing a multi-goal deficit with 20 minutes left in regulation, UC was unable to gain ground and suffered a 3-1 defeat.
The Red & Black totaled eight shots on the night, including four on goal. The Bearcats also lined up one corner kick in the match. Seven different UC players recorded a shot in the game with four tallying tries on target (Igl, Tranberg, Panley, Elmardi). Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) led the way with two total shots.
