CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Bowling Green on Tuesday night at Gettler Stadium in its final nonconference match of the season.
With the defeat, UC fell to 3-12-1 on the season, while BGSU improved to 5-5-4 in 2018. The loss also snapped the Bearcats' six-match win streak against the Falcons.
In the first of UC's final two home games of the year, the two teams played evenly in the opening half with neither giving up much ground. The Red & Black was able to create a couple chances on the offensive end in the first half with Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) totaling two shots, including one on goal. UC's defense was solid as well with goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) notching a pair of saves. As a result, the score was knotted at zero heading into halftime.
The Bearcats were aggressive offensively to begin the second half, but just weren't able to deposit a score. The Falcons broke the tie in the 53rd minute on a goal by Tate Robertson. Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Red & Black pushed ahead searching for the equalizer with Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) initiating a couple opportunities 15 minutes into the period. BGSU responded by adding an insurance goal in the 63rd minute on a score by Achille Robin. In a 2-0 hole late, UC struggled to maintain possession as the visitors protected their lead. Ultimately, the two second-half scores were too much for the home team to overcome as it came up short, 2-0.
Smythe led the way for the Bearcats offense with three shots on the night, including a pair on target. Melink chipped in two shots, both on goal. Lawrence ended the night with three saves. As a team, UC attempted eight shots and two corner kicks.
