CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati football safety James Wiggins (Miami, Florida/South Dade) and kicker Cole Smith (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) were named American Athletic Conference Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Wiggins made the game-winning play in overtime to give Cincinnati a 26-20 win at SMU, keeping the Bearcats a game out of first place in the American Athletic Conference East Division. With the Bearcats on defense to start overtime, Wiggins picked off a third-down pass over the middle and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown. Wiggins leads the Bearcats with three interceptions and scored his first career touchdown.
Smith scored eight points, including a pair of second-half field goals, to help Cincinnati to a 26-20 win at SMU. Smith hit from 24 yards in the third quarter to give the Bearcats a 17-7 lead and he made a 41-yard attempt as time expired in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
WR Kahlil Lewis set career highs with 12 receptions for 174 yards along with a pair of touchdowns to earn a spot on the AAC weekly honor roll.
UC returns home to play three of its final four regular-season games at Nippert Stadium, starting with Navy on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The Bearcats (7-1, 3-1 AAC) are coming off a 1-1, two-game swing to Temple and SMU where both games ended in overtime.
