CINCINNATI - Naomi Urbano, a three-time American Athletic Conference champion and member of three team titles with the University of Cincinnati track and field program, was recently inducted into the Metepec Sports Fame Walk at a ceremony held October 25 in Metepec, Mexico, her hometown. Urbano, who excels in the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon for the Bearcats, was a member of the eight-person inaugural class that now has a plaque and memorabilia placed in the Hall of Fame at the Municipal Institute of Physical Culture and Sports of Metepec.

"It was an honor to be there, especially after all I have been through because it feels nice to be supported, not only by my hometown, but by UC," Urbano said. "I feel very happy to be involved in this so I can hopefully inspire other people."

Urbano was one of eight individuals enshrined that also included athletes in golf, swimming, mountain climbing, BMX and athletics (track & field). Additionally, she was one of just two women in the inaugural class.

"I think it is awesome (to be one of the two women)!" Urbano said. "I was not expecting that. I felt like I didn't deserve to be there, but now I hope girls of younger ages can get inspired by what I have done. I hope this can help make them aware that if you study hard and practice hard, you can go as far as you want in life."

Following the ceremony, Urbano and the rest of the class were escorted to the Hall where each were able to place items from their competition careers in the glass case to be displayed. Urbano chose to include the first pair of competition spikes she wore and her Team Mexico uniform top from when she competed in the Junior Pan-American Games to accompany her plaque.

Urbano is currently training with her teammates for the start of the 2019 indoor track and field season that is now just a little over one month away. The Bearcats will open their 2019 season in 2018 as they compete in the Hoosier Open in Bloomington, Ind., December 7.
