CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to three games Tuesday night when it battled the visiting Bradley Braves to a scoreless, double-overtime, 0-0 draw at Gettler Stadium.
With the tie, the Bearcats improved to 3-7-1 on the season, while the Braves moved to 5-2-3 in 2018.
Closing a three-match homestand, UC was aggressive in the first half with eight shots, but just weren't able to capitalize with a score. Senior Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy) had a couple tries early in the match, but was unable to find the back of the net. Playing solid defense throughout the period, the Red & Black had a chance to break thru on a Marcello Jones (Cornwall, England/Truro College) to Daniel Oginni (Mississauga, Ontario/King's Christian Collegiate) combo that sailed just wide of the net in the 37th minute. The Bearcats finished the first half with eight shots and two corner kicks.
Coming out of the halftime break, UC maintained the intensity on offense with opportunities off of set pieces, but was unable deposit a score. With time in regulation winding down, the Bearcats pushed harder. The Red & Black nearly came away with the game winner during the 88th minute when three shots were attempted, capped by a Jones try from inside the box that was saved.
Unable to decide a winner after 90 minutes, the two teams went to the first overtime with neither squad giving up any ground. As such, a second overtime was forced in which early on Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) fired a shot wide of the net and Moritz Schaller (Austria/Vienna University) attempted a corner kick. Despite leading in the shots column for the game, 20-6, the Red & Black was unable to tally the winning-goal, settling for a 0-0, double OT draw.
In addition to UC's 20 shots, the home team also had a game-high six corner kicks. The hero of the last two matches, Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point) led the Bearcats offense with four shots. Jones, Mowery, and Melink each had three. UC's defense was stout in giving up zero shots on goal as goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) picked up his second shutout of the season and the third of his career.
