CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati punter James Smith (Wangaratta, Australia) was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week, the Augusta Sports Council announced Wednesday.
Smith, a sophomore, punted five times against the Bulls, averaging 49.2 yards per kick with three kicks dropped inside the 20-yard line and long kicks of 64 and 51 yards. In the first half, he dropped three punts inside the USF 15-yard line placing them on the 15, 12 and 1, respectively.
On the season, UC leads the NCAA and American Athletic Conference in net punting, averaging 44.1 net yards per kick. Smith's 46.6 yard average ranks No. 6 in the NCAA FBS and No. 2 in the American, half a yard behind Tulsa's Thomas Bennett.
Smith has been tabbed for Ray's 8, highlighting the best punters in college football each week, on five occasions in 2018.
