CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati punter James Smith (Wangaratta, Australia) was named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2018 Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week, the Augusta Sports Council announced Thursday.

Smith, the reigning Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week, ranks No. 6 in the NCAA FBS with his 46.6 yards per punt average. The Bearcats lead the NCAA FBS and American Athletic Conference in net punting (44.1). Smith had a career-long 72-yard punt against Temple earlier this season and has dropped 20 kicks inside the 20-yard line with 13 going 50 yards or more with only one touchback.

The sophomore has been honored on Ray's 8, highlighting the best punters in college football each week, on five occasions in 2018.

The candidates were evaluated by the Ray Guy Award committee on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on net punting average, number of times a punt was downed or kicked out-of-bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.

A national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and previous Ray Guy Award winners will decide the three award finalists who will be announced on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Voters will then vote again to determine the winner who will be announced live on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Ray Guy Award will provide one additional vote as determined by football fans. The Fan Vote will be located on the Ray Guy Award website and is equivalent to one national selection committee member's vote. The vote will be included for the selection of the finalists and the winner.

The No. 24 University of Cincinnati football team heads out on the road for the final time in the regular season with a key American Athletic Conference East Division matchup at No. 11 UCF on Saturday. The Bearcats (9-1, 5-1 AAC) have won three straight and 10 of their last 11 games while the Knights are riding a 22-game winning streak, longest in the NCAA FBS, and a 13-game home winning streak. ESPN's College Gameday will broadcast from Orlando on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon while the Bearcats and Knights will kick off at 8 p.m. ET in a nationally-televised matchup on ABC with radio coverage on 700 WLW AM.
