PITTSBURGH – University of Cincinnati women's basketball dropped a 65-48 decision to Pitt Friday at Petersen Events Center.
After an even first half, UC was outscored 35-18 in the second half. Sophomore forward IImar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) led the way for the Bearcats on the offensive end with 12 points. Junior forward Angel Rizor (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) chipped in 10 points, a team-best seven rebounds, as well as three assists.
With the loss, the Red & Black drop to 2-2 on the season, while the Panthers even up at 2-2 in 2018-19.
Playing away from Fifth Third Arena for the first time this season, the Bearcats struggled in the opening quarter, making just three field goals and went into the second period facing a 14-6 deficit. UC fought back in the second quarter with a 7-0 run early in the stanza. The Red & Black followed with sophomore guard and Pittsburgh native Michaela Porter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) nailing a 3-pointer with 3:29 to go before halftime to give UC its first lead of the game, 24-22. The two teams battled over the duration of the quarter as they went into halftime deadlocked at 30.
In the third period, baskets seemed hard to come by for the Red & Black, while the home team was able to convert on the other end. A late-third-period UC scoring drought allowed Pitt to take a 48-37 advantage into the final quarter. With the Bearcats still struggling to find the bottom of the net in the fourth, the Panthers increased their lead to as many as 17 points midway through and stayed in control over the duration of the game to defeat the Red & Black, 65-48.
Junior guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) put together another solid all-around game with eight points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Junior guard Florence Sifa (Bujumbura, Burundi) chipped in nine points. As a team, UC scored 28 points in the paint, got 24 points from its bench, turned 18 Pitt turnovers into 14 points, and dished out 13 assists on 19 made field goals.
