CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati women's basketball defeated the visiting Austin Peay Governors, 69-48, Tuesday night at Fifth Third Arena in both teams' regular-season opener.

The Bearcats (1-0) featured a balanced offensive attack against APU (0-1) with five players scoring in double figures, led by 14 from junior guard Florence Sifa (Bujumbura, Burundi/Jacksonville College). Junior guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) added 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while senior guard Nikira Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne), junior guard Sam Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East), and sophomore forward IImar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) each contributed 10 points.

Though its offense was evenly distributed, the UC defense was the story of the night, holding the Governors to 31-percent shooting from the field and 60 points below their scoring output Friday against Georgetown College in exhibition action.

The two teams competed pretty much even during the first quarter with the Red & Black taking a 17-15 edge into the second. The UC defense really bogged down the APU offense in the second quarter, limiting it to just three made field goals as it pushed ahead to lead 40-24 at halftime.

The visitors from Clarksville, Tennessee made up some ground in the third period, outscoring the Bearcats 16-14. Still in control of the game with a 54-40 advantage to begin the final quarter, UC finished strong with an 8-2 surge over the final six minutes of the game to come away with a 69-48 victory.

For the game, UC shot the ball at a 50-percent (28-of-56) clip, including 9-for-12 in the second quarter. The Red & Black turned APU over 24 times resulting in 23 points. The Bearcats were dominant in the paint with 40 points and got 30 points from their bench. The Red & Black continued to push the pace with 18 points in transition and turned seven offensive rebounds into 10 second-chance points.
