CINCINNATI - Aaron Bienenfeld, a junior with the University of Cincinnati cross country team, competed for Team Germany Sunday at the 2018 European Cross Country Championships in Tilburg, Netherlands, and placed 33rd overall in the U23 competition to help the Germans to a fourth-place team showing.
Bienenfeld was the third German to cross the finish line, finishing in 24:56 over the 9,000m course. Similar to his run at the NCAA Championships three weeks earlier, Bienenfeld got off to a slow start and was toward the back of the field before charging forward, moved up 52 positions throughout the competition. He started off in 85th place through the first 1,000m of the race before climbing to 65th (2,500m), 48th (4,000m), 37th (5,500m) and 34th (7,000m) before crossing the line 33rd.
The meet featured 93 runners from 16 nations with the Top 3 finishers for each team scoring in the competition that saw France win the U23 team title with 11 points while Great Britain/Northern Ireland was second with 30 points and Spain third with 42. Germany was fourth with 48 points with Belgium rounding out the Top 5 teams with 58 points.
Bienenfeld and the rest of the Bearcats will be back in action on the indoor track in January when they travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Jim Greene Invitational January 11-12.
