COLUMBUS, Ohio – University of Cincinnati women's basketball staged a second-half comeback, but came up short Sunday afternoon with a 69-56 loss to Ohio State at Value City Arena.
The Bearcats (5-4) rallied from a 23-point, second-half deficit to trail by just three points, 59-56, with three minutes left in regulation. The Buckeyes (3-2) responded with a 10-0 run over the duration of the fourth quarter to come away with the victory.
Junior guard Sam Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) led the Red & Black with a season-high 14 points, to go along with a career-high four steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Rodgers was joined in double figures by junior guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) who totaled 10 points and a team-best and career-high-tying seven rebounds. Sophomore forward IImar'I Thomas, too, scored double digits (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) with 10 points.
In its second-straight game on the road, the Bearcats battled early, but quickly fell behind. Following an and-1 conversion from Rodgers to bring the score to 4-3, OSU, minutes into the game, the Buckeyes went on an 11-1 run to go up 15-4 midway through the opening quarter. Trailing 26-15 heading into the second period, UC got within nine with five minutes remaining until halftime, but were outscored 9-1 over the duration of the quarter to trail 41-24 at the break.
The Red & Black's hole dug a bit deeper early in the third quarter with the Scarlet & Grey increasing its lead to a game-high 23 points with 7:35 to play in the period. Looking to get back in the game, the Bearcats answered with a 16-6 run to end the third to trail just 55-42 heading into the final quarter. In the fourth, UC was able to chip away at the OSU lead with a 9-4 burst to get within eight with 5:32 left. The Red & Black's run continued with five unanswered points over the next three minutes to pull within three, 59-56, with 2:55 remaining. Armed with the momentum, the Bearcats had the script flipped on them with the Buckeyes scoring the final 10 points of the game to spoil UC's rally.
The Bearcats shot the ball at a 39-percent clip for the game, but buried an impressive 47 percent of its attempts in the third quarter as they got back into the game. UC was edged just 34-32 on the glass and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds which it turned into nine points. The Red & Black was also able to force the home team into 19 turnovers which it converted into 11 points. In addition, the Bearcats scored 26 points in the paint, got 20 points from their bench and dished out eight assists.
