Track & Field In Action at Indiana & Vanderbilt This Weekend

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track and field squad returns to the action this weekend, splitting up to compete at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana and Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee on Jan. 18-19, 2019.

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track and field squad returns to the action this weekend, splitting up to compete at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana and Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee on Jan. 18-19, 2019.

Thirty-six members of the team will compete at Indiana's Gladstein Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The weight throw, pole vault, triple jump, 3,000m, 400m, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 3,000m invitational, and mile are are scheduedl for Friday afternoon and evening. Saturday events include the long jump, high jump, shot put, 200m, 600m and 4x800m relay.

Twenty-one student-athletes will make the trip to Nashville, competing in sprint, mid-distance and distance events. Bearcats will compete in the 200m and 5,000m on Friday, 300m, mile and 400m between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday and the 60m hurdles, 60m dash, mile, 400m, 800m, 3,000m and 4x400m relay Saturday afternoon.

// BLAUT EARNS JEAN STEPHENS MEMORIAL AWARD
Loretta Blaut, a member of the University of Cincinnati women's track & field program and a two-time NCAA runner-up in the high jump, has been named the 2018-19 Jean Stephens Memorial Award recipient, the UC Department of Athletics announced January 15. Blaut, a fifth-year senior, was one of 10 finalists for the high honor that was announced at halftime of Tuesday's men's basketball game with visiting USF. Read the complete story HERE.

// BLAUT NAMED AAC WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Blaut earned her second-straight American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field weekly award of the 2019 season on Tuesday. She cleared 1.81 meters (5-11.25) for the fourth-best jump in the nation last week at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky. A four-time American champion and two-time national runner-up, Blaut holds the top two jumps in the conference this season (1.82m and 1.81m) in her first two meets. She ranks among the Top-4 jumpers in the nation and was the top collegiate finisher in her event at UK, placing second behind a professional competing unattached. Last year, Blaut was twice honored as the women's field athlete of the week as she earned the indoor accolade February 6 and the outdoor honor April 3. She also was twice named the AAC Most Outstanding Performance Award winner for women's field competitors at both AAC Championship events in 2018.

The Bearcats opened 2019 with several strong performances at the Jim Green Invitational at Nutter Field House in Lexington, Kentucky.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Irati Mitxelena had a pair of Top-5 finishes, taking second in the triple jump with a best leap of 12.42m and fifth in the long jump with her effort of 5.81m.
  • Allie Plybon led four UC student-athletes among the Top-15 finishers in the pole vault. Plybon took fifth and her best leap of 3.90m was a PR, season best and tied for the No. 8 mark in Bearcats history. Brooke Catherine was seventh (3.75m), Rachel Coghill tied for ninth (3.75m) and Lily Bunse placed 15th (3.45m).
  • Malin Smith's toss of 15.24m in the shot put was a season-best throw, personal best and the No. 5 UC mark all time.
  • Andre Wright had a strong showing in both he long jump and triple jump. He set the No. 3 all-time Bearcats mark with a triple jump of 15.09m. It was also a season and personal best. In the long jump, Wright leapt 7.37m, the No. 6 all-time UC mark and a season and personal best.
  • Arthur Greenlee IV ran 8.04 in the 60-meter hurdles final, a seventh-place clocking which ranks No. 5 all-time in the UC record book and also ranked as a season and personal best.
  • In the 800 meters, Michael Vitucci took fifth while Jase Headings was seventh. Both ran personal bests with Vitucci clocking 1:51.32 and Headings with a 1:51.76. Those times rank No. 4 and No. 6 all-time in the UC record book, respectively.
