CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer seniors Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) and Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) have both been recognized by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA).
Smythe was picked as All-Ohio and Academic All-Ohio, while Helbig, too, was tabbed for the All-Academic Team.
A marketing major with a 3.43 cumulative grade point average (GPA), Smythe started 13 matches in 2018. At the forward position, he scored two goals and dished out an assist during the fall season. Previously, the Cincinnati native was named to the 2018 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and was also selected Preseason All-AAC.
Helbig, an accounting major with a 3.80 GPA, started eight matches in the fall, logging more than 700 minutes on the pitch. The defender contributed to the Bearcats defense recording three shutouts in 2018. In addition, he was inducted into the UC Department of Athletics Legion of Excellence with the team's highest cumulative GPA. Helbig also garnered 2018 AAC All-Academic Team honors and was a finalist for the prestigious Jean Stephens Memorial Award.
The accolades are the first of the players' careers. UC men's soccer has had at least one All-Ohio selection every season since 2006.
The Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association is one of the oldest and most prestigious college soccer associations in the nation. The OCSA represents all National Collegiate Athletic Association divisions (NCAA), all National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics divisions (NAIA) and all National Junior College Athletic Association divisions (NJCAA) in Ohio.
