CINCINNATI – The first American Athletic Conference Weekly Awards for lacrosse were announced today with University of Cincinnati junior Monica Borzillo being named the AAC Attacker of the Week and fellow junior Sam Mlkvy being selected for the Honor Roll as the duo led the scoring for the Bearcats on opening weekend. Last week, UC (1-1, 0-0 AAC) opened the 2019 season with a 16-6 home loss to Ohio State before rebounding to defeat Kent State, 19-8.
// BORZILLO ON THE ATTACK
Borzillo picked up where she left off last year by leading the Bearcats on the offensive side of the ball once again, this time to the tune of 14 points on 9 goals and 5 assists in two games. The league leader in goals (9) and points per game (7.0) in the early days of the league, Borzillo tallied three points (2g-1a) against Ohio State before notching 11 points (7g-4a) against Kent State for UC's first win of the year. On a program level, her 11 points are the most in a single game in UC history while her 7 goals are just one off her own record while her 4 helpers give her 66 for her career, leaving her atop the program's career assist ladder. In the AAC through the opening weekend, Borzillo's 11 points (next closest is 6 points) and four assists against KSU stand as the most in a single game in AAC history.
// A BORZILLION HONORS
Borzillo is no stranger to weekly awards as this week's honor from the American is her 10th career award. The first AAC Attacker of the Week, Borzillo was named the Big East Attacker of the Week three times in 2018 after being named the Big East Freshman of the Week five times in the 2017 season. She also was named to the Big East Honor Roll as a freshman.
// MLKVY HONORED
Mlkvy had a hot hand in both games over the weekend, posting back-to-back hat tricks as she led the team with three goals against Ohio State before adding four more against Kent State. While her offensive numbers have her tied for second in the AAC in goals scored (7) and among the Top 6 in both goals per game average (3.5) and points per game (4.0), her play all over the field was widely felt in the opening weekend as she recorded 17 draw controls (the most in the AAC by 9) and 9 ground balls (tied for the lead with UC's Morgan Dukes) while causing 4 turnovers. In the opener with OSU, she recorded all 11 draw controls won by the Bearcats, tying her for second on the single game list at UC and just 2 off the all-time record.
// HISTORICAL LOOK
The award for Mlkvy is her second career Honor Roll selection after being named to the Big East's team April 24, 2018. Including this year, seven Bearcats have been selected to the weekly honor roll since the start of the 2015 season with Mlkvy the lone duplicate entry on the list.
// NEXT UP
The Bearcats will be back in action at home Friday with Marquette paying a visit to Gettler Stadium. The meeting between former Big East rivals will start at noon and admission is complimentary as part of the Experience UC initiative.
