FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Two University of Cincinnati women's golfers placed among the top 20 on the final player leaderboard at the sixth annual JU Amelia Island Collegiate at Amelia National Golf and Country Club with sophomore Vanessa Manrique (Bogotá, Colombia) finishing in a tie for 12th, while junior Alyssa Burritt (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) tied for 19th.
As a team, the Bearcats finished the tournament in eighth place – in a talented field of 16 teams – with a three-round total of 923. Battling tough conditions for much of the day, the Red & Black totaled a 317 during Tuesday's third and final round.
After turning in a two-round 149 following Monday's opening two rounds – including a 1-under-par 71 in the first – Manrique kept the momentum going on Tuesday with a 76 in the third and final round. In the round, she made a pair of birdies on the back-nine holes to move up from a tie for 13th to a tie for 12th.
Burritt also managed to move up in the standings from a tie for 21st on Monday to a tie for 19th on Tuesday with a final-round 77 featuring, again, two birdies on the back nine. Junior Daniela Murcia (Bogotá, Colombia) improved on Tuesday with an 81 after a second-round 81, including a pair of birdie scores. Senior Anika Hitt (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) withdrew from the tournament in the third round.
The Bearcats will be back in action March 4-5 at the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Florida.
// HEAD COACH JANET CARL ON THE BEARCATS
"Today was not the result we were looking for. The conditions were poor the last seven holes, but we seemed to let it slip away during that time. We need to learn that when conditions are poor, it is an opportunity to move ahead, instead of giving up strokes. We need to get home and get some work done before the next event."
