COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The University of Cincinnati track and field team posted a strong start at the Charlie Thomas Invitational Friday with three multi-event student-athletes setting personal and American Athletic Conference-best marks at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Naomi Urbano and Angelica Lightfoot placed 2-3 in the pentathlon, respectively, and Damien Berthenet is in second placed after day one of the heptathlon sitting 61 points out of the top spot. Berthenet is making his UC debut in the heptathlon.
The rest of the Bearcats will compete tomorrow with field events beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET and running finals starting at 3 p.m.
WOMEN'S PENTATHLON
Urbano finished in second place, tallying a PR of 3,873 points, the top mark in the American Athletic Conference this season. Her effort ranks among the Top-15 marks in the NCAA this season and is the No. 3 UC mark of all-time, surpassing her 2018 personal best of 3,830 points. She won the high jump, had two third-place finishes in the shot put and 800m, respectively along with a fourth in the long jump.
Lightfoot posted a PR of 3,862 points and placed second. It is the No. 2 mark in the American this season and the No. 4 UC mark of all time. She led most of the evening, earning event wins in the 60m hurdles and high jump while placing second in the long jump and third in the high jump. She shattered her previous personal best of 3,742 points, set at the AAC indoor championship a year ago.
The event was won by Shaina Burns, competing unattached, who scored 3,964 points.
Lightfoot won the first event out of the gates, clocking 8.61 to take first in the 60m and set a pentathlon PR and the No. 2 time for UC in pentathlon history. Urbano placed eighth with a PR of 9.20 and the No. 8 UC pentathlon time.
Urbano won the high jump, setting a PR with her leap of 1.72m which tied for the No. 2 UC pentathlon mark of all-time and earned her 879 points. Lightfoot was on her heels in third, jumping 1.66m, also a PR and the No. 5 UC pentathlon mark.
Lightfoot returned to the top spot in the shot put with a heave of 13.04m which netted her 730 points. Urbano threw a PR of 11.79m to grab 647 points I third place and the No. 6 UC pentathlon mark.
A leap of 5.65m in the long jump placed Lightfoot second, earning her 744 points, a PR and tied her for the No. 3 UC pentathlon mark in the event. Urbano was fourth with her effort of 9.20m, setting a PR and the No. 8 UC pentathlon mark.
Urbano posted the best UC effort in the 800m, clocking 2:23.42 to place third for 778 points. Lightfoot posted nearly a two-second PR of 2:38.62, finishing in seventh for 589 points.
MEN'S HEPTATHLON
Berthenet tallied 2,964 points through the first four events of the heptathlon, making his UC debut in the heptathlon. His day-one tally ranked as the No. 3 performance in UC history and the best since Alex Bloom's 3,299 day-one effort in 2017.
Berthenet started the day with a fifth-place finish in the 60m dash, clocking a season-best time of 7.42, the eighth-best heptathlon time in the record books. He leapt 6.85m in the long jump, the fourth-best effort in UC annals and good for 778 second-place points. He placed second again in the shot put, tallying 662 points after a toss of 12.91m which was the No. 3 UC heptathlon mark all-time and also took second in the high jump, with a best effort of 1.98m, also the third-best mark in the record books.
He is 61 points behind Asani Hylton of South Plains who posted a day-one total of 3,025 points. The heptathlon continues Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run taking place.
