CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2019 Air Force Reserve American Championship and will play the winner of the seventh-seed Tulsa (18-13, 8-10) vs. 10th-seed SMU (13-16, 5-12) matchup in quarterfinals action Friday, March 15 at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU and 700 WLW.
The Tulsa-SMU first-round contest is scheduled for Thursday, March 14 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
The Bearcats wrapped up the regular season 25-6 overall and 14-4 in The American, finishing second in the league standings two games behind first-place Houston. It marks the fourth time in six seasons in the conference that the Bearcats have finished first or second in the league standings. Cincinnati won the regular-season outright a year ago and shared the title with Louisville in 2014. The Bearcats finished second to SMU in 2017.
Cincinnati came up short of earning a share of The American's regular-season title on Sunday at Fifth Third Arena, falling to No. 12 Houston 85-69. Jarron Cumberland scored a team-high 20 points. Nysier Brooks added 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field with two blocks.
Cincinnati looks to win back-to-back league tournaments for the first time since 1994 and 1995 while in the Great Midwest Conference. A year ago, the Bearcats defeated SMU (61-51), Memphis (70-60) and Houston (56-55) in consecutive day to win the 2018 American Championship in Orlando. Fla. It marked UC's first league tournament championship since 2004 (Conference USA).
Cincinnati won both meetings this season against Tulsa: 70-65 in overtime on Jan. 10 in Tulsa and 88-64 on Jan. 24 in Cincinnati. The Bearcats also won both contests with SMU: 73-68 on Feb. 2 in Cincinnati and 52-49 on Feb. 27 in Dallas.
Cincinnati owns a 28-12 advantage all-time against Tulsa, having won six in a row in the series. The Bearcats posted an 80-61 win over the Golden Hurricane in the quarterfinals of the 2017 American Championship.
Cincinnati leads the SMU series 12-5 overall, having won each of the last five meetings. The two teams have met in each of the last two AAC tournaments, with the Bearcats winning 61-51 in the quarterfinals last year. SMU defeated Cincinnati 71-56 in the 2017 AAC tournament championship game in Hartford, Conn.
