CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) was named to the Haskins Award Watch List on Monday for the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States.

The prestigious award is college golf's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy which honors the top college football player.

Squires is listed 61st among the nation's top golfers according to the most recent GolfStat rankings and owns a program-record low 70.88 stroke average after six tournaments in 2018-19. Squires has finished as high as a tie for third at two events this year: at the Rod Meyer Invitational (5-under par 211 on Sept. 9, 2018) and at the Seminole Intercollegiate (6-under 210 on Feb. 24, 2019).

Among his many past accomplishments, Squires was named the 2017 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, a two-time AAC First Team honoree (2017 and 2018), a two-time U.S. Amateur qualifier who advanced to the quarterfinals of match play in Pebble Beach, Calif., in August 2018, and a 2018 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar.

Squires became only the fifth player in school history to participate in the NCAA Tournament in 2017, tying for 21st place (7-over 223) at the West Lafayette regional.

Squires owns two collegiate tournament titles, winning back-to-back individual medalist honors at the Firestone Invitational in 2016 and 2017, and has posted Top 5 finishes in eight other tournaments during his career.

Named in memory of Fred Haskins, a former golf professional at the Country Club of Columbus (Georgia), the Haskins Award selects its winner from votes tabulated from the Haskins Commission made up of select writers, golf coaches and collegiate golfers.

Two additional Haskins Award Watch Lists will be released this spring. The next list, to be released in mid-April, narrows the list to the top 15 players. The final Watch List will be released after the NCAA Regionals, narrowing the field to 10 finalists.
