CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati baseball battled in a pitchers' duel Friday in the series-opener with Niagara, falling 2-1.
 
Neither team was able to plate a run until late as the Purple Eagles scored their two in the seventh and the Bearcats brought their run home in the eighth. Both teams ended the day with just four hits each.
 
// NOTABLES
• A.J. Kullman went 7.0 strong innings in the start with just one earned run, four hits, one walk and six strikeouts
• Evan Shawver also had a good outing, throwing the final two frames with no hits, one walk and three strikeouts
• Niagara's starter threw a complete game with four hits, one run, three walks and six strikeouts
• Joey Bellini had two of the team's hits
• A.J. Bumpass had a double, the team's only extra-base hit

A triple and double opened up the scoring in the game. Niagara then tallied another run after a ground out and an error
