CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati baseball dropped an 8-7 decision to Niagara on Sunday afternoon to close out an eight game homestand.
 
// NOTABLES
Wyatt Stapp and Cole Murphy both had two hits on the day in the middle of the order
Jeremy Johnson also had two hits out of the nine-hole
Mitch Holding led the team with three RBI, two of which came on a homerun
Garrett Schoenle went 4.0 innings in the start and Nathan Moore followed with 2.0 innings of relief
Clayton Colvin was tagged with the loss after throwing an inning
Evan Shawver did not allow a run with two hits and four strikeouts while throwing the final two frames

Top of the 2nd
The Purple Eagles scored first on a walk and two singles
Bottom of the 2nd
• The Bearcats answered and took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Murphy singled before Sean McLaughlin reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a failed pickoff attempt. Holding then hammered a pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homerun
Top of the 5th
• UC gave up a big inning in the fifth, allowing Niagara to get back ahead with a four-run frame. A single, walk and hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. Three singles and a sacrifice fly would allow four different Purple Eagles to earn a RBI
Top of the 6th
• Niagara put its lead at 6-2 on a bases-loaded walk
Bottom of the 6th
• The Bearcats had a big rally with a five-run sixth inning to take a one-run lead. Stapp, Murphy and McLaughlin started it off with two singles and a walk to load the bases. A.J. Bumpass then earned a RBI on a base hit and a fielder's choice from Holding allowed another run to come in. Jeremy Johnson singled up the middle to plate another then stole second. With two on, Joey Bellini ripped a single to center field to score the game-tying and go-ahead runs.

• Unfortunately, the UC lead did not last, as Niagara scored two on a walk, single and a double to win the game
 
// UP NEXT
• UC travels to Wright State on Tuesday then starts conference play at USF next weekend
• The Bearcats return home on Friday, March 29 to host Tulane for a three-game series
