Lopez Goes Low, Shahzan Ties for Fourth on Final Day at Bama Beach Bash

GULF SHORES, Ala. – University of Cincinnati women's golf wrapped play Sunday at the South Alabama/UAB Bama Beach Bash at Gulf Shores Golf Club with sophomore Angela Lopez (Bogotá, Colombia) leading the way with a third-round score of 70, while sophomore Amalia Shahzan (Kedah, Malaysia) and the Bearcats as a team both finished the tournament in fourth place.

GULF SHORES, Ala. – University of Cincinnati women's golf wrapped play Sunday at the South Alabama/UAB Bama Beach Bash at Gulf Shores Golf Club with sophomore Angela Lopez (Bogotá, Colombia) leading the way with a third-round score of 70, while sophomore Amalia Shahzan (Kedah, Malaysia) and the Bearcats as a team both finished the tournament in fourth place.
 
Over three days, the Red & Black turned in a team score of 918, including a final-round 302. Shahzan, UC's top scorer, shot a 76 in the third round to stay solid with a tie for fourth overall on the player leaderboard.
 
Lopez, after carding rounds of 80 and 83 on Friday and Saturday, really buckled down for Sunday's final round with a 70. The tournament-best score for the Bearcats included four birdies and 12 par scores.
 
Competing as individuals, senior Emma Wachtel (Rorschwihr, France/Jean Sturm Gymnasium) and freshman Erin Evans (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) each had improvements from Saturday to Sunday with an 85 to an 84 and an 88 to an 83, respectively.
 
In addition, junior Daniela Murcia's (Bogotá, Colombia) play remained relatively steady on Sunday with a third-round score of 79 after back-to-back rounds of 77. Junior Alyssa Burritt (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) ended the tournament with a final-round 77, while freshman Lily Rinker (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) ended play in a tie for 39th place.
 
The Bearcats will be back in action April 1-2 at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate in Memphis, Tennessee.

"This event was an opportunity to continue to knock the rust off after coming out of the winter. We saw some good play from all individuals, which we are pleased with. We still have many things to work on. When we get back, we'll have a couple days to get ready for our next tournament in Memphis. Great job by Amalia with her top-5 finish."
