CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team makes its long-awaited return to the tennis courts at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center. The Bearcats will lay out the welcome mat for the Dayton Flyers on Wednesday, March 27. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
// LOOKING BACK
The Bearcats made the long voyage to the west coast for a pair of matches against Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State.
Doubles, which has been a strong point for the Bearcats, was a rough go on the trip out west. Both Loyola Marymount and Long Beach jumped out early and claimed the doubles point from UC.
Bramato/Coutino move to 8-4 for the season.
Guna/Philp move to 7-4 for the season.
Looking to bounce back, the Bearcats put up a fight in singles action, but again fell short in both matches. In the match against Loyola Marymount, the Lions took the first three singles points, clinching the match and leaving the remainder unfinished. The match against Long Beach was shortened due to lightning, but the 49ers were able to claim the first three singles points and the match as well.
Santilli moves to 9-2 for the season, including 7-0 on court #5.
Miceli moves to an 8-2 record.
Morton moves to an 8-5 record.
The team stands at 41-27 in singles play during dual matches.
// SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers haven't exactly taken to the sky. Their season thus far could be categorized much like the Wright Brothers first flight at Kitty Hawk, long patches spent on the runway, a quick take to the air and right back to the ground.
After opening their season with back to back sweeps at the hands of Ball State and Youngstown State, Dayton got the propellers turning for a soaring feeling with a 5-2 victory over Saint Francis (PA). The feeling was short lived as they went in to a tail spin in a three-match skid against IUPUI, Northern Kentucky and Western Michigan. The Flyers got the engines turning again with a 4-3 victory over Valpo, but hit some turbulence as they fell to Milwaukee and Xavier before straightening things out in a 4-0 sweep of Saint Joseph's.
The smooth flying was short lived as they were run out of the sky by the Falcons of Bowling Green in a 7-0 sweep, but thanks to some fancy maneuvering, they recovered in a 6-1 victory over Wittenberg. Since then, the Flyers have been grounded as they've fallen to Western Kentucky, Austin Peay, Belmont, Lipscomb, Saint Louis and Duquesne.
After scouring their flight records, it appears that the Flyers top pilot is Emily Zargham. Zargham routinely led the squadron in to battle & faced off with the oppositions best on court #1. Dayton's next in command would likely be Kelly Pleiman or Natalie Allen.
