University of Cincinnati volleyball's Assistant Coach Kevin Carroll received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2019 Thirty Under 30 Award as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
The award was created in 2009 to recognize up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels. Of this year's recipients, Carroll is one of eleven coaches from Division I women's volleyball while six coach at the high school/club level, four in Division III, three in Division II, two in Division III men and two-year college, and one recipient coaches at the NAIA and Division I-II men's level.
"I am greatly honored by this award," said Carroll. "We put a lot of effort into this team and this season. It feels really good to be recognized and I am glad for the opportunity provided by [Head Coach] Molly Alvey. I've played the game, watched the game, studied the game, etc. I can't imagine myself doing anything other than volleyball. Naturally, coaching is a great fit."
"This is a great honor for Kevin to be recognized by his peers," commented Alvey. "We are lucky to have someone as talented, both as a player and a coach, on our staff. I am excited to see our program continue to grow because of his influence."
Carroll joined the Bearcats in January 2017 and has been a big part of Cincinnati's success on the court as the team reached the second round of NCAA Tournament play for just the fifth time in school history this past season. The Bearcats finished the 2018 season with a 26-8 record and had three players earn all-conference honors, including redshirt-junior national standout Jordan Thompson and freshman Maria Mallon. Prior to UC, Carroll coached at West Virginia and UC Irvine.
Prior to his coaching career, Carroll was a part of three national championship teams at UC Irvine in 2009, 2012 and 2013. He was also a member of the US Men's Junior National Team in 2006 and 2007, gaining international experience traveling to Mexico and Morocco to play in the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation tournament and the Junior World Olympics. Carroll won a bronze medal and was named to the all-tournament team at the 2005 and 2006 Junior Olympics while playing with the Riptides Volleyball Club.
