HOUSTON, Texas – University of Cincinnati baseball held on late Thursday night to win the series-opener at Houston by a score of 3-2.
David Orndorff was brilliant in his first weekend start of the season. He went 8.0 inning strong with one run, five hits and five strikeouts. His two walks were intentional and he threw just 88 pitches.
// NOTABLES
• UC moves up to 18-19 on the year and 8-5 in conference play
• Houston drops to 22-16 and 6-7
• After Orndorff exited, Korren Thompson threw the final inning to earn his fifth save this season
• Griffin Merritt and Jeremy Johnson both finished 2-for-3 at the plate
• Joey Wiemer stayed hot with a three-run homerun, the difference-maker offensively
// KEY INNINGS
Top of the 5th
• The Bearcats got on the board with a big swing to start the scoring in the fifth. After a double play, Joey Bellini was hit by a pitch and Wyatt Stapp singled to put two on. After a pitching change, Wiemer crushed the first pitch the new hurler threw over the wall in right field for a 3-0 lead
Bottom of the 6th
• The Cougars got one back on a trio of base hits, but recorded the first out of the inning when the batter tried to advance to third. That proved big, because later with bases loaded and two outs, a runner was caught too far off first base. When Orndorff threw over to Merritt at first, Merritt threw home and Holding was able to apply the tag and finish the inning and the threat with an out at home plate
Bottom of the 9th
• In the final frame, the Cougars scored after four singles and threatened with bases loaded and just one out. However, Thompson worked out of it with a strikeout swinging and a ground out to third
// UP NEXT
• The series in Houston continues with a 7:30 p.m. EST game on Friday night
• The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. EST
• UC returns home to Marge Schott Stadium with games on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Bearcats host Louisville and Eastern Kentucky
