HOUSTON, Texas – University of Cincinnati baseball lost the final game of the series at Houston Saturday afternoon by a score of 8-4.
 
// NOTABLES
• UC is now 18-21 and 8-7 in conference
• Houston sits at 24-16 and 8-7
• Wyatt Stapp had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a run scored
• A.J. Bumpass had two big swings, hitting a double and triple with two RBI
• With the triple, Bumpass became UC and the American's all-time leader in career triples with 14
• Garrett Schoenle got the start on the mound, going 2.1 innings and was followed by 3.0 innings of work by Clayton Colvin who struck out four
• Chase Stewart threw 1.0 inning in relief and Nathan Moore threw the final 1.2 with no hits, no walks and two strikeouts
 
// KEY INNINGS
Bottom of the 2nd
A walk, hit batter and another walk loaded the bases in the second. A two-run single down the left field line gave the Cougars the lead
Top of the 3rd
• The Bearcats got a run back when Johnson led off the third with a double and scored later on a Joey Bellini base hit
Bottom of the 3rd
• Houston added two more runs in the bottom of the frame on a walk, two singles, another walk, fielder's choice and a base hit
Top of the 4th
• UC continued to respond, as Bumpass started the fourth with a triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Merritt. The Bearcats threatened with bases loaded in the inning, but a double play ended the frame
Bottom of the 6th
• The Cougars added three in the sixth to lead by five. The scoring started with two walks (one intentional), a fielder's choice and then a steal of home when the Bearcats tried to catch a runner moving from first to second. After another walk and double steal, a fly ball to center looked to end the inning, but a balk was called to allow a runner to come home. A single followed to make it 7-2

Houston scored its final run on a walk, sacrifice bunt and single
Top of the 9th
• UC found late life and rallied in the ninth to score two. Bellini started with a walk and Stapp followed with a base hit to put two on. With one out, Holding was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bumpass came up with the big hit, doubling to left center to score two. Two fly outs ended the game as the Bearcats were not able to come any closer

UP NEXT

• UC returns home to Marge Schott Stadium with games on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Bearcats host Louisville and Eastern Kentucky
• The two midweek games start off a lengthy homestand as UC hosts Wichita State in conference play next weekend
