University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) carded the best final-round score at the American Championship on Tuesday, carding a 5-over 66, to finish second at the three-day event at 7-under 73-67-66=206.

Squires finished six strokes behind individual medalist McClure Meissner of SMU, who led the event from wire to wire earning a 13-under 66-66-68=200.

Squires registered five birdies, an eagle and 10 par scores on Tuesday at the Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla. His eagle on the par-5, 590-yard 14th hole moved the senior to 6-under. He took bogies on two of his final three holes to slow his momentum.

It marks the best finish by Squires at the American Championship, surpassing his tie for fifth at the 2017 event. Squires' 66 score Tuesday also equals his best round of 2018-19, matching his first-round effort at the Seminole Intercollegiate on Feb. 23. He finishes the regular season with a program-record low 70.55 stroke average, earning four Top 5 finishes in 2018-19.

UC sophomore Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian High School) finished second among the Bearcats, tying for 21st place at 8-over 73-71-77=221. Freshman Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove High School) completed the event tied for 34th place at 13-over 77-74-75=226. Redshirt-sophomore Andy Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood High School) recorded his best round of the tournament with a 3-over 74 Tuesday to finish tied for 36th at 75-78-74=227. Redshirt-freshman Mason Lenhart (R-Fr., Prospect, Ky./North Oldham High School) tied for 45th place at 75-79-78=232.

As a unit, Cincinnati tied UConn for sixth in the 10-team event, posting a 26-over 296-290-292=878. Memphis claimed the team title, finishing at even par 286-282-284=852.

// QUOTING COACH DOUG MARTIN
On Austin Squires
"Austin has played well every single week this season. Even when he wasn't at his best, Austin still found a way to be competitive, never finishing a tournament below 16th place all year.
"His maturity has always set him apart. His ability to deal with adversity and move past it is part of the reason he has developed into the player that he is today. A lot of young players can't do that. He is without question the best player in the history of our program."

On Cincinnati's 2018-19 season:
"Playing the way we did in the fall really set us up for a good spring. But we were unable to put together several team rounds. We needed better scores from our No. 3 and No. 4 players. We were never able to get into any rhythm. We played two freshmen and two sophomores most of the season who learned a lot that can help them in the future.

"Memphis won this tournament because they had five guys that played solid golf together. That's the type of team we need to develop into in the future. We need five guys that can shoot 70 to 74 every day."
