CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati baseball captured a 5-1 victory Friday night against Wichita State thanks to an all-around effort.
// NOTABLES
• UC improves to 20-22 on the season and 9-7 in conference play
• Wichita State now sit at 20-21 and 5-8
• David Orndorff had another solid start. He went 7.0 innings with one run, five hits, one walk and five strikeouts
• A.J. Kullman followed in relief with a clean inning that included a strikeout
• Korren Thompson pitched the ninth and got a ground ball to end the game on a double play
• Wyatt Stapp blasted his second homerun of the season and finished 2-for-4 at the plate
• Joey Wiemer, Jace Mercer and Jeremy Johnson all also went 2-for-4 while Mitch Holding finished 2-for-3
• The team totaled three double plays on the night

Bottom of the 2nd
• A single by Wiemer started the second and was followed by a double from A.J. Bumpass. With two in scoring position, Griffin Merritt scored Wiemer on a sacrifice fly to right field. Holding had a single later on to score another

• Stapp's solo shot with two outs made it a 3-0 game
Bottom of the 4th
• The Bearcats were able to score two more in the fourth when bases were loaded on singles by Merritt, Mercer and Holding and Johnson advanced everyone one base on a single of his own. A fielder's choice by Eric Santiago made it 5-0
Top of the 7th
• A solo homerun by the Shockers broke the shutout, but it came with two outs and they weren't able to do any more damage
// UP NEXT
• The two teams continue the series with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday
• The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch at noon
• UC has no midweek baseball next week due to finals, but action will be back at Marge Schott Stadium next weekend when UC hosts nationally-ranked ECU
