COLUMBUS, Ohio – University of Cincinnati baseball struck early to take down Ohio State 9-5 Wednesday night.
 
// NOTABLES
• UC improves to 11-16 while Ohio State falls to 16-13
• David Orndorff had a great start on the mound and got better as the game went on
• The senior starter went 6.0 innings with three runs, three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. He retired the final twelve batters he faced
• Nathan Moore followed with a scoreless inning and Chase Stewart also threw out of the bullpen
• Clayton Colvin earned the save as he entered the game with bases loaded and one out. He struck out the first batter he faced, walked the next then struck out another to end the inning with minimal damage
• Colvin closed the door in the ninth with two more strikeouts to end the game
• Joey Bellini and Eric Santiago both finished with three hits and a double. Santiago also walked twice
• Jace Mercer went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI and two walks
• A.J. Bumpass kept his hit streak alive with a 2-for-4 day at the plate
 
// KEY INNINGS
Top of the 1st
The Bearcats threatened early as the game started with walks to Mercer and Bellini and Wyatt Stapp was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Joey Wiemer followed with a fielder's choice to score the game's first run
Top of the 2nd
• UC posted a big inning with five runs. It started yet again with some help, as Bumpass and Santiago walked and Jeremy Johnson was hit by a pitch. Mercer then singled two home. Bellini followed with another base hit. Stapp was also issued a walk to load the bases. A new pitcher entered the game and threw one away in the dirt to let in a run on the wild pitch. Wiemer picked up his second RBI in as many innings with a sacrifice fly to deep center field
Bottom of the 3rd
• The Buckeyes were able to get on the board with a three-run third. A walk, single and double started the scoring. The next two runs came home via a ground out and a sacrifice fly.
Top of the 4th
• The Bearcats took advantage of some more mishaps by the Buckeyes. Mercer reached on a walk, Bellini doubled and Mercer ran home on a wild pitch
Top of the 7th
• UC put up another crooked number with a two-run seventh. Bumpass and Santiago both singled. Then, Ohio State's pitcher threw over to first to check on Santiago, but no one was covering and Bumpass was able to hustle all the way home and Santiago made his way to third base on the error. Mason DeAnna followed with a RBI base hit
Bottom of the 8th
• Ohio State scored two in the bottom of the eighth but could not get any closer. Two walks and a single loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly tallied a run. The other run came after a bases-loaded walk

// UP NEXT
• AAC play resumes this weekend with a trip to UConn
• Next week will be a busy one at Marge Schott Stadium
• The Bearcats host the annual Joe Nuxhall Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday then UC hosts UCF April 12-14
