CINCINNATI – For the second time in three seasons, University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) will participate as an individual in the NCAA Men's Golf Championship Regionals. He was selected Wednesday to play in the Stanford Regional on May 13-15 at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

The selection makes Squires the first player in school history to earn multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He first qualified for the event as an individual in 2017, producing the highest finish in program history by tying for 21st place (7-over 223) in West Lafayette, Ind.

Though the Bearcats did not qualify for the national tournament as a team this season, Squires is one of 45 players in the nation taking part in the event as an individual, not attached to a specific team.

The Stanford site is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments played May 13-15. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals, May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

Unanimously named to the American's All-Conference Team earlier Wednesday, Squires enters the 2019 event ranked 55th nationally among all collegiate players. He owns a school-record 70.55 stroke average and finished second at the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 23 after carding a season-best 7-under par 206. He posted four Top 5 finishes in 2018-19, never finishing outside the Top 16 in any of UC's 11 tournaments.

Squires was selected as the first individual for the Stanford Regional. He will be joined by Riley Elmes (Loyola Marymount University), James Nicholas (Yale), Kyler Dunkle (Utah), Teddy Zinsner (Yale), Guillaume Fanonnel (Louisiana-Monroe), Alex Lee (Fresno State), Jack Rhea (East Tennessee State), Shiso Go (East Tennessee State) and Jake Vincent (Southern Utah).

The 13 teams competing at the Stanford site are Arizona State, Stanford, LSU, NC State, North Carolina, South Florida, Kansas, Virginia, Ole Miss, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Augusta University and Denver.

Squires is only the sixth Bearcat in school history to participate in the NCAA Tournament. Former UC player David Tepe took part in the 2013 NCAA Tournament after qualifying automatically by winning the BIG EAST Championship. George McManis (1965), Geoff Hensley (1969) and Jon Nichols (1974) also represented UC at the national tournament.

The former 2017 AAC Player of the Year, Squires has twice qualified for the U.S. Amateur (2017 and 2018). Last summer he advanced to the quarterfinals of match play at the U.S. Amateur in Pebble Beach, Calif.
