University of Cincinnati's Jordan Thompson has been named to USA Volleyball's 30-player preliminary roster for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, as announced by the organization Wednesday night.

The US team will play in Bulgaria, Italy, China, Russia and the United States as sixteen countries compete to win the premier annual international volleyball tournament. Team USA won the inaugural Volleyball Nations League in 2018. Fifteen pool play matches will be played by each country over the span of five weeks with four groups of four teams competing in round-robin action every week. The top five teams from the preliminary round will compete in the VNL Final Six in July.

Thompson will be coached by US Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly, who won gold medals as a player in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games and is the only player, male or female, to win Olympic gold in both indoor and beach volleyball. Kiraly was named the US Women's National Team Head Coach in 2012.

Among Thompson's 29 teammates are numerous Olympians, including setter Carli Lloyd, middle blocker Rachael Adams and opposite Karsta Lowe. Thompson will wear jersey No. 12 and is one of five opposites on the roster. The team will begin play May 21-23 in Bulgaria as part of Pool 2 that includes the host country, Japan and Belgium.
