MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Cincinnati baseball grabbed an early lead then held on to win 7-4 after a lengthy rain delay in the series-opener at Memphis on Friday.
The Bearcats led 7-3 as the game headed into the bottom of the eighth, but the rain settled in and caused a delay lasting four hours and twenty minutes. After the lengthy break, the Tigers were able to bring one run in, but Korren Thompson shut the door with three strikeouts in the final 1.2 innings to secure the win

• UC improves to23-26 on the season and 12-10 in conference while Memphis falls to 25-23 and 8-10
• David Orndorff had a great start, going 6.1 innings with two runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts
• A.J. Kullman and Nathan Moore both pitched in relief before Thompson finished the game for his eighth save of the season
• Joey Bellini had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a homerun and four RBI
• Jeremy Johnson also went 2-for-4 with a double

• Five minutes before the game started Wiemer said he felt a mullet mash coming today and he did not disappoint, hitting one out over the left field wall after Santiago led off the day with a walk
Top of the 2nd
• Jace Mercer and Johnson put runners on the corners with a single to start the second before Santiago sent Mercer home on a base hit. Bellini then told Wiemer, "Anything you can do, I can do better," smashing his first UC homerun over the left field wall to score three
Top of the 5th
• The Bearcats added a run in the fifth when Santiago led off with a walk and scored on a Bellini single
Bottom of the 7th
• With bases loaded after two singles and a walk, the Tigers were able to get on the board on a wild pitch. The next batter grounded out and the next singled to make it a 7-3 game
Bottom of the 8th
• After the rain delay, Memphis scored one on a walk, single and double

• The Bearcats and Tigers continue the series with a 3 p.m. EST game on Saturday
