University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) carded an 1-under par 69 to tie six other players for 15th place Monday during opening-round play at the NCAA Championships Stanford Regional in Stanford, Calif.

Squires enters Tuesday's second round five strokes behind tournament leader Jake Vincent of Southern Utah, who posted a 6-under 64 on the first day. Squires will tee off Tuesday beginning at 2:06 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com. The three-day event concludes Wednesday.

Squires started 1-under through three holes on the Stanford Golf Course (Par 70; 6,727 yards). However, a bogey on the fifth hole followed by a double bogey on the sixth led to a 2-over score at the turn. He went bogey free on the final nine holes, posting a trio of birdies to go with six of his 12 par scores for the round.

"Austin put together a very solid performance today," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He had a double bogey on the sixth hole where he didn't execute and got into some trouble. Otherwise, he had a clean round, drove the ball well and hit some solid iron shots.

"The goal tomorrow is to get off to a clean start and build off today," Martin added. "He's in a good place, hitting the ball well. He just needs to make some putts."

The Stanford site is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments played May 13-15. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams are competing at Stanford. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five advancing teams will move on to the finals, May 26-31, at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.

Host Stanford leads the team standings after the first round, earning a 6-under 274 score Monday. UNC Greensboro is second at 5-under 275, followed by Georgia Southern (5-under 278) and North Carolina (even par 280). USF and Ole Miss are tied for fifth at 2-over 282.

Squires is the first player in UC history to earn multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He first qualified for the event as an individual in 2017, producing the highest NCAA finish in program history by tying for 21st place (7-over 223) in West Lafayette, Ind.

Unanimously named an all-conference team selection by American Athletic Conference coaches earlier this month, Squires enters the 2019 event ranked 55th nationally among all collegiate players according to GolfStat rankings. He owns a school-record 70.55 stroke average and finished second at the American Championships on April 23 after carding a season-best 7-under par 206. He posted four Top 5 finishes in 2018-19, never finishing outside the Top 16 in any of UC's 11 tournaments.

Squires is only the sixth Bearcat in school history to participate in the NCAA Tournament. Former UC player David Tepe took part in the 2013 NCAA Tournament after qualifying automatically by winning the BIG EAST Championship. George McManis (1965), Geoff Hensley (1969) and Jon Nichols (1974) also represented UC at the national tournament.
