University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) posted a 1-under par 69 to climb into a tie for 11th place at 2-under 69-69=138 during second-round action Tuesday at the NCAA Championships Stanford Regional in Stanford, Calif.
Squires is tied for 11th place with four other players, five strokes behind Stanford's Isaiah Salinda, who carded a 3-under 67 Tuesday to sit atop the leaderboard at 7-under par 66-67=133.
Squires enters Wednesday's final round two strokes off the pace to qualify for the finals of the NCAA Championships, May 26-31, at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. To advance to the finals, Squires needs to complete the tournament as the top individual scorer not attached to one the top five teams. While team standings often change throughout each round, entering Wednesday, Squires ranks fifth among individuals not among the current top five teams behind only Utah's Kyler Dunkle (4-under 69-67=136), LSU's Philip Barbaree (4-under 68-68=136), Virginia's Ashton Poole (3-under 73-64=137) and LSU's Luis Gagne (3-under 71-66=137).
Squires started Tuesday's second round with six consecutive par scores before running into bad luck on the par-5 seventh hole. There, Squires' bunker shot plugged into the front lip of the bunker, resulting in a double bogey. He rallied to post a birdie on the ninth hole to stand at 1-over at the turn. Squires proceeded to post a 2-under 33 on the back nine thanks to birdies on No. 10 and No. 16 and seven par scores.
Squires will tee off Wednesday's final-round play at the Stanford Golf Course (Par 70; 6,727 yards) beginning at 1:48 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
"He's played at a level well enough to qualify after the first two rounds," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He's hitting the ball well and making good decisions on the course. He just needs to get a few putts to drop Wednesday."
The Stanford site is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments played May 13-15. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams are competing at Stanford. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five advancing teams will move on to the finals, May 26-31, at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
Host Stanford continues to lead the team standings after the second round at 15-under 274-271=545. Arizona State (5-under 283-272=555) and North Carolina (280-275=555) are tied for second place, 10 strokes behind the Cardinal. Georgia Southern is fourth at 4-under 278-278=556. Ole Miss is fifth at 3-under 282-275=557.
Squires is the first player in UC history to earn multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He first qualified for the event as an individual in 2017, producing the highest NCAA finish in program history by tying for 21st place (7-over 223) in West Lafayette, Ind.
Squires is only the sixth Bearcat in school history to participate in the NCAA Tournament. Former UC player David Tepe took part in the 2013 NCAA Tournament after qualifying automatically by winning the BIG EAST Championship. George McManis (1965), Geoff Hensley (1969) and Jon Nichols (1974) also represented UC at the national tournament.
