University of Cincinnati volleyball's Jordan Thompson turned heads last fall as she led the NCAA in points, kills, points per set and kills per set in a record-breaking season. This summer, she drew admiration around the world while competing with the USA Women's National Team in the Volleyball Nations League.
After five weeks of pool play with Team USA qualifying for the final pool, Thompson was fourth on the team in points and remained the only player with remaining college eligibility to make the 14-player roster every week of VNL action. She was one of three players on the full USA roster that can return to a college campus to compete this fall. With her 33 points against Brazil to send USA to the semifinals, Thompson became the first American to score 30 or more points in a VNL match. Teammate Annie Drews, who was named VNL MVP, also recorded 33 points in the gold medal contest.
In the first week in Bulgaria, Thompson scored 14 points while playing a little over a set in a Team USA 3-1 victory against Japan. She followed that up with 11 points on nine kills and two aces against host Bulgaria. In week two in Italy, Thompson started the first three sets in an exciting five-set USA win over the Italian National Team and then played valuable minutes against the Dominican Republic. Back home in Nebraska, she played in nationally-televised matches, including some highlights against Germany. Week four Team USA headed to China where Jordan recorded seven kills on twelve attacks versus Turkey. She continued to help the team remain successful in the final preliminary pool in Russia.
Once again making the 14-player roster for the final pool, Thompson traveled back to China with Team USA looking to repeat as VNL Champions. During the second match against Brazil, Thompson's efforts led the team to a spot in the semifinals. Her five points while subbing in two sets were a part of the US victory over Brazil on Sunday, July 7 to capture the VNL title.
The VNL featured 16 national teams on both the men's and women's side and is the premier worldwide competition hosted by the FIVB. The US women are now two-time VNL Champions. Next up for Team USA will be the FIVB Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament held August 2-4 in Louisiana. Thompson returns to Cincinnati this fall for her redshirt-senior season.
