CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati rising junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier High School) will participate in the 2019 U.S. Amateur, Aug. 12-18, at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.
Amlung claimed the last of three qualifying cards in the 81-player field Tuesday at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, carding an even par 71-71=142. He birdied the first hole of a playoff with Jack Smith (71-71=142) for the final position. Trevor Johnson (4-under 67-71=138) and Camden Solomon (69-71=140) earned the other two cards, finishing ahead of Amlung in the 36-hole qualifier. Qualifying rounds started Monday but heavy afternoon rain postponed the event's conclusion until Tuesday morning.
Amlung will join 2018-19 Bearcats teammate Austin Squires at the nation's top amateur event next month. Squires earned one of 67 exemptions into the championship after advancing to the match-play quarterfinals of the 2018 U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.
Amlung's invitation to the 2019 event is one of 312 being sought through qualifying at 96 sites across the country and in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico from July 1-24.
It marks the fourth consecutive year a Bearcats men's golf player has qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Amlung joins Squires (2017, 2018, 2019), Davis Baxter (2018) and Emerson Newsome (2016) on that list. Squires' quarterfinals finish a year ago marked Cincinnati's highest finish at the event in school history.
Amlung played in five tournaments last season for the Bearcats, finishing with the third-lowest stroke average on the team at 75.56.
