CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati running back Michael Warren II (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) was named to the initial watch list for the 2019 Maxwell Award, given annually to college football's best player.
Warren, a Second-Team All-AAC honoree in 2018, rushed for 1,329 yards in 12 games. He had the third-best, single-season rushing total in UC history and set school records for overall TDs (20) and rushing TDs (18). He was the third rusher in school history with seven 100-yard games and was the first with four in-a-row since 1998. Warren was the MVP of the Military Bowl, rushing for a UC bowl record and career best 166 yards along with two scores. His 81-yard TD run against Tulane was the second-longest scoring run in program history and the longest rushing score since 1953.
He was a preseason First-Team All-AAC choice by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele's Preseason College Football Magazine.
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
The Bearcats, picked second in the AAC preseason media poll, finished 2018 with 11 or more wins for the third time in program history (2008, 2009) and knocked off Virginia Tech in the 2018 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. Entering 2019, UC is set to return more than 85% of its roster, over 5,000 yards of total offense, 10 of its Top-15 tacklers and 14 starters from the 2018 squad.
UC will report for training camp later this month to begin preparations for the 2019 season which opens in primetime on ESPN against UCLA on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Nippert Stadium.
