The University of Cincinnati is something that has been a part of nearly my entire life.
Some of my early memories were going to football games at Nippert Stadium with my father and also Bearcats basketball games at the then Riverfront Coliseum when we competed in the Metro Conference. I also remember attending my father's graduation from UC in Nippert. He earned his business degree through the school's evening programs. I remember astronaut Neil Armstrong giving the commencement address. As a child I thought it was quite a big deal to hear from someone on the UC faculty that had been to the moon.
Fast forward to the fall of 1989 when I began my time as a student-athlete on the men's tennis team. I always felt a responsibility to always compete my very best because I was not only representing UC, but also the city of Cincinnati where I grew up. I loved my time competing as a Bearcat. I was a team captain, earned a Most Valuable Player award, but most importantly made the lifelong friendships that you make when you are a part of a team. My teammates and I remain connected and we get together either once a year or at least every other year around a home Bearcats football weekend. I feel it so important for our group to remain connected and I hope our reunions continue for many years to come.
Towards the end of 2014 I was given the chance to come back to lead our women's tennis program at my alma mater. Coming back to coach at the very school where I competed on the court has been everything I imagined it would be and then some. The University of Cincinnati is a far different place from what it was some 20-25 years ago. The academic reputation is still present and even stronger than when I earned my degree here, but the campus life and environment has made the University of Cincinnati a destination campus for so many that are here today.
It is an honor to lead a sports program at our city's university. To be a part of an athletic department with so much support that puts everyone involved in position to be successful is something I am so grateful to be apart of. My wife Lynn (a Bearcat alum) and I are so happy to be a part of everything UC. I am hopeful that under my leadership and with the support of so many around our program I can help rewrite some of our history around the women's tennis program before my time is through as a coach. I know my career as a coach cannot last forever, but I am certain I will be forever UC.
Go Bearcats!!!!!
