CINCINNATI –University of Cincinnati football student-athletes Darrian Beavers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain/UConn) and Kyriq McDonald (Huntsville, Alabama/James Clemens/Alabama) were granted immediate-eligibility waivers by the NCAA Thursday.

The American Athletic Conference also waived its intra-conference transfer rule in Beavers' case.

Beavers, who came to UC in the spring of 2019, will be a junior and McDonald, who joined the Bearcats in the summer 2019, will be a redshirt sophomore.

Beavers spent two seasons at UConn, playing 24 games and leading the huskies with 4.0 sacks a year ago. He finished his career there with 38 career tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss and 7.0 sacks. The local product was part of three GMC Championship teams at Colerain HS as a prep.

McDonald played two seasons at Alabama, redshirting as a true freshman and playing in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2018. He totaled seven tackles and a QB hurry, earning the Alabama coaches' special teams players of the week for his play against Mississippi State and Auburn.

The team returns to the Sheakley Athletics Center turf Friday before packing up for an almost three-week stay at the Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center in West Harrison, Indiana. The off-campus training camp home of UC for 20+ years, the 268-acre facility 30 minutes from campus features a pair of turf fields and a football-focused setting to enhance preparations for the 2019 campaign.

The Bearcats, picked second in the AAC preseason media poll, finished 2018 with 11 or more wins for the third time in program history (2008, 2009) and knocked off Virginia Tech in the 2018 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. Entering 2019, UC is set to return more than 85% of its roster, over 5,000 yards of total offense, 10 of its Top-15 tacklers and 14 starters from the 2018 squad.

UC opens the 2019 season in primetime on ESPN against UCLA on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Nippert Stadium. Anyone who has yet to renew their tickets for this season and new season ticket holders should contact the athletics ticket office at 1-877-CATS-TIX or online at GoBEARCATS.com/tickets
