University of Cincinnati volleyball will see its first action of the 2019 season when it hosts Butler for an exhibition match at Fifth Third Arena on Wednesday, August 21 at 6 p.m.
All fans receive complimentary admission to the event and to Bearcats' home matches all season long as part of the department's Experience UC initiative.
Redshirt-senior Jordan Thompson returns to UC after a summer spent competing with the U.S. Women's National Team, winning the Volleyball Nations League and earning a 2020 Tokyo Olympics berth. She is joined by fellow upperclassmen juniors Chrystanthi Stamatiou and Emily Azzara as well as transfer Ashley Kozer. Sophomores Damjana Cabarkapa, Maria Mallon, Armania Heckenmueller and Hannah Bolinger return familiar faces to the court. Sophomore transfers Adria Oliver and Mackenzie Conner will also vie for valuable playing time. Redshirt freshmen Shannon Williams, Nevena Santrac and Dimitra Tziarli add experience to the roster. A strong freshman class of Kerstin Ficker, Sheilah Purcell, Maria Tobergte, Karoline Fauske and Madison Waters round out the UC lineup.
The Bearcats hope to build on a successful 2018 season. Last year, UC finished 26-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for just the fifth time in program history after receiving the second at-large tournament bid in American Athletic Conference history. Thompson led the nation in points, kills, points per set and kills per set while smashing numerous records along the way. Mallon impressed by earning First Team All-AAC honors.
Butler went 9-21 last year with a 6-12 record in BIG EAST play. Outside hitter Anna Logan was named to the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST team earlier this year.
UC's 2019 season official begins on Friday, August 30 with matches against South Carolina and Pittsburgh at the Panther Challenge. The Bearcats home-opener in Fifth Third Arena is slated for Saturday, September 21 versus Bowling Green.
