PITTSBURGH – University of Cincinnati volleyball secured its first sweep of the season on Saturday against Cleveland State, winning 26-24, 25-24 and 25-20.
 
// NOTES
• Maria Mallon and Jordan Thompson led the offense with 18 kills each
• Mallon attacked at .424 percent with ten digs for her first double-double of the year
• Thompson added in eight digs, two blocks and three aces
• Armania Heckenmueller led the team with 41 assists
• Kerstin Ficker finished with 14 digs
• Damjana Cabarkapa had six kills on eight attempts with two blocks
 
// SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: UC, 26-24
The first set went back-and-forth with the win up for grabs until the very end. Tied 12-12, Cleveland State went ahead 15-13 after an error and two kills. Down 17-14, Maria Tobergte got a point back on a kill. UC found itself down 22-19, but then rallied late. Mckenzie Conner entered the match and immediately served an ace. Two Thompson kills followed and a Vikings error tied the set at 23. After Tobergte tied it back up at 24, two Cleveland State attack errors gave UC the set win.
 
Set 2: UC, 25-14
The Bearcats got off to a hot start in the second set. They scored seven of their first eight points on kills, three by Thompson, two from Cabarkapa and two by Tobergte, to lead 8-2. After a Vikings timeout, Tobergte and Adria Oliver added in kills and Thompson an ace. Mallon had back-to-back kills to push the lead to 16-4, forcing a timeout. Yet another Mallon kill made it set point before Thompson closed out the set with a kill of her own.
 
Set 3: UC, 25-20
Cleveland State started out the third set with a 7-2 advantage before UC worked back to tie it at ten after kills by Oliver, Thompson and Cabarkapa. Cabarkapa had another kill later on to tie it at 13 before an error handed the Bearcats their first set lead. UC would not give the lead up. A Mallon kill and two attack errors caused the Vikings to call a late timout as they trailed 23-19. The Bearcats finished the match with a Mallon kill and a block by Cabarkapa and Thompson.
 
// UP NEXT
UC travels to East Lansing, Mich., for the Spartan Invitational next weekend. The team will face Tennesee and host Michigan State on Friday, September 6 then conclude the event with a match against Indiana State on Saturday.
