// ABOUT THE BEARCATS
The 2019-20 Bearcats feature a young 10-player roster without a senior.
Juniors Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier), Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian HS), Joe McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier/DePaul), a transfer from DePaul, and redshirt junior Andy Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood HS) are the most veteran players on the team.
Amlung, who played in five tournaments a year ago, performed well over the summer, qualifying for the U.S. Amateur along with tying for third place at both the Kentucky Open and Ohio Amateur. Osterburg owns the team's lowest returning stroke average from last season at 73.87. He carded par or better scores during 12 rounds in 2018-19 with a pair of top-10 finishes. McCarthy, posted four top 25 finishes last season at DePaul. Mayhew played in eight tournaments last season, including the American Championship.
Sophomore Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and redshirt sophomores Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS) and Tommy Sulllinger (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS) lead the underclassmen. Jean played in 10 tournaments last season with a pair of top 10 finishes, including a tie for 17th at the Rod Myers Invitational. Lenhart posted Top 40 results in six of the first seven tournaments of 2018-19.
Redshirt freshman Jack Kunkel (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS), and freshmen newcomers Ty Gingerich (Russiaville, Ind./Guerin Catholic HS) and Cole Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) look for their first opportunities this season.
// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On the start of the fall season:
"We had some good things happen this summer for our guys. Clay Amlung had six top 10s in summer events and qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Ty Gingerich won the Indiana Junior among other things that guys did. Anytime you come back in the fall and guys have had a good summer there's a lot of excitement around the team. We've had a really dedicated group of guys that have worked really hard over the summer so I'm anxious to see what they come out and do in the fall."
On how the roster shapes up this season:
"We have a very young team with no seniors this year. But even though we're young I think we have a lot of experience. We've got a lot of guys that have played a lot of college rounds. We brought in a transfer from DePaul in Joe McCarthy, who's played every single tournament in his two years at DePaul. He's going to bring some experience to the team.
"We've got a lot of returning guys that have played a lot in Andy Mayhew, Clay Amlung, Mason Lenhart, Nicolas Osterberg and Sam Jean. Then we have two seasoned freshmen in Cole Harris and Ty Gingerich, who both played really good summer schedules all throughout junior golf. And then there's an opportunity for Jack Kunkel, who made great progress as a redshirt last year. It should be a very competitive roster for us."
