GAMEDAY INFO: Football Celebrates Military Appreciation Day Saturday vs. Miami (OH) CINCINNATI - For the 124th time, the University of Cincinnati will face the Miami RedHawks in the nation's oldest nonconference rivalry. The 2019 edition of the game kicks off at noon ET inside Nippert Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by ESPNU and air on 700 WLW AM, XM 380 and Sirius XM Internet channel 969. Both teams are 1-1 on the season with a home win and road loss at a Big Ten Conference school. UC knocked off UCLA at Nippert on Aug. 29 ahead of falling to No. 5 Ohio State in Ohio Stadium on Sept. 7. Miami lost at Iowa and beat Tennessee Tech at Yager Stadium last Saturday.

THE SERIES
Saturday marks the 124th meeting in the oldest NCAA FBS non-conference rivalry. Miami (OH) leads the all-time series 59-57-7 but UC has won 13-straight games, including a 21-0 rain-soaked victory at Paul Brown Stadium in 2018. 

THE COACHES
Luke Fickell, the 2018 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, is in his third season at Cincinnati. The 42nd head coach in program history, Fickell took the reins in December 2016 after 15 years at his alma mater, Ohio State. A veteran of nearly 20 years in the FBS ranks, Fickell was a part of nine Big Ten Conference titles (seven as a coach, two as a player) and two national championship squads with 16 postseason games and 13 NFL Draft selections under his belt.

Chuck Martin is in his sixth season as the head coach at Miami (OH) after four years on former UC coach Brian Kelly's staff at Notre Dame (2010-13). Martin was 74-7 in six years at Grand Valley State (2004-09) and is 23-40 at Miami (OH).

  • The Bearcats play their 132nd football season in 2019. UC's program dates to 1885 and is one of the 10 oldest in the NCAA FBS. UC has won a league title five times in the last 12 years and has played 10 bowl games in the past 13 years.
  • UC has won four-straight American Athletic Conference FB Team Academic Excellence Awards in 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018.
  • UC, picked second in the AAC preseason media poll,  had 11 wins a year ago, marking only the third time in program history the feat has been achieved (2008, 2009). The Bearcats return more than 85% of the roster, over 5,000 yards of total offense, 10 of its Top-15 tacklers and 14 starters from the 2018 squad.
  • The 2019 roster features players from 14 states and six countries with 72 hailing from Ohio and 26 from the Cincinnati area. Forty-five percent of the roster (53/117 players) is made up by freshmen and redshirt freshmen.
  • UC is in its third year under OC Mike Denbrock and DC Marcus Freeman, the first time the Bearcats have had the same primary coordinations in three-straight years since 2004-06 (Don Treadwell and Pat Narduzzi).
  • UC will not play consecutive home or road games this season, the first time in the modern era it has occurred.
  • UC added several transfers to the roster, LB Darrian Beavers (UConn), S Bryan Cook (Howard), K Sam Crosa (Western Illinois), OL James Hudson (Michigan), S Kyriq McDonald (Alabama), WR Garyn Prater (Ohio State) and WR Blue Smith (Ohio State). Crosa (grad transfer) earned the starting kicker job. Beavers, McDonald and Smith received immediate-eligibility waivers, Prater is immediately-eligible as a walk-on-transfer and Cook and Hudson will sit out this season.
  • The Bearcats opened the season with a 24-14 win over UCLA at Nippert Stadium, leading wire-to-wire and holding the Bruins' offense to 218 yards of total offense and 62 yards rushing. The Bruins accounted for 114 of their yards on two plays, passes of 75 and 39 yards. 
  • UC was shut out for the first time in 170 games at Ohio State on Sept. 7. UC lost 42-0 and hadn't been held scoreless since a 38-0 loss to West Virginia on Nov. 9, 2005. The OSU loss snapped a five-game, non-conference winning streak.
  • UC and Miami first met in 1888 in the nation's oldest non-league rivalry. They have played annually since 1945.
  • UC had 5.0 tackles for a loss at Ohio State and have tallied 2.0 or more TFLs in each of the last 145 games.
  • TE Josiah Deguara has a reception in 15-straight games and was UC's leading receiver vs. UCLA (4-53-1).
  • P James Smith, a 2018 finalist for the Ray Guy Award, has 127 career punts and only two touchbacks. 
  • RB Michael Warren II had 92 yards against UCLA and has tallied 60 or more yards in 13 of the last 15 games.

HONORING THE 2009 BEARCATS
The Bearcats will honor the 10th Anniversary of the 2009 perfect regular season throughout the campaign with all season ticket holders set to receive an exclusive dual bobblehead commemorating one of the greatest plays in UC history, the 29-yard TD strike from Tony Pike to Armon Binns in UC's come-from-behind win over Pitt on Dec. 5, 2009.
 
All 2019 UC football season-ticket holders will receive the dual bobblehead, one per ticket purchased. The season-ticket book, also exclusive to season-ticket holders, features a dual 2009-2019 season-ticket design showcasing Bearcats stars of past and present.
