In its first road game of the 2019 regular season, UC dropped a 2-0 decision to Wright State on Tuesday night at Alumni Field in Dayton, Ohio.
With the loss, the Bearcats dropped to 1-3 on the young season, while the Raiders – the preseason pick to win the Horizon League – moved to 2-2 on the year.
After an even opening 30 minutes, WSU, in its regular season home debut, collected a goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart) deflection and deposited the ball into the back of the net to go up 1-0. As such, the Red & Black went into halftime down a goal.
The Bearcats were aggressive in the following period in search of the equalizer, registering five shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the second half. With the offense unable to cash in, UC was dealt a crushing blow late when Lawrence was issued a red card which the Raiders turned into a penalty-kick conversion to put the match away, 2-0.
// SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
WMU improved to 2-2 on the season with a commanding 4-0 shutout at Green Bay on Sunday afternoon. Four players scored for the Broncos, as the WMU offense recorded four goals for the second-consecutive Sunday. On the season, the Broncos are led by reigning Mid-American Conference (MAC) Player of the Week senior midfielder Anthony Bowie who has scored a team-best three goals, as well as added two assists. Freshman midfielder Brennan Creek and graduate midfielder Sam Biek have each contributed a pair of scores, with Creek also adding two helpers. In the preseason, WMU was picked to finish second in the MAC – with one first-place vote – just behind nationally-ranked Akron.
// CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONORS
A pair of Bearcats were recognized by the American Athletic Conference (AAC) on Monday afternoon with freshman midfielder Kyle Healy (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) selected as Rookie of the Week, while Lawrence was picked for the weekly honor roll. Healy scored his first-career goal vs. No. 10 Xavier on Sept. 6, while Lawrence totaled nine saves last week and leads the league with 16 stops on the year.
