CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer took 24th-ranked West Virginia to overtime on Tuesday night at Gettler Stadium, but ultimately fell victim to a 96th-minute golden goal and a 2-1 defeat.
Following the back and forth match, UC dropped to 1-5 on the year, while WVU moved to 4-1-1 overall.
The Bearcats were aggressive early and cashed in on their efforts with Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) getting his team on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 19th minute off helps from defenders Aerin West (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) and Trey Asensio (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) for his second of the year. The Red & Black continued their energy throughout the first half, taking a 1-0 lead over the nationally-ranked Mountaineers into halftime.
WVU stormed out of the locker room in the second period and quickly evened things up with a score during the 50th minute off of a set piece just outside the box following a violation issued to Bearcats goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Sacred Heart). With both squads in search of the go-ahead goal late in the half, the intensity increased with each having opportunities on goal. Following an unsuccessful late push by the sides, the match headed to overtime.
After tight defense the opening five minutes of the extra period, the Red & Black were dealt a crushing blow in the 96th minute when Lawrence got caught out of his box retrieving the ball and left an open net which the Mountaineers capitalized on.
The home team totaled 11 shots on the night with five coming on target. Junior Creggton Charlton (Clarendon, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State) led the way again for the UC offense with a pair of tries on goal, while Commissiong, Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State), and Marcello Jones (Cornwall, England/Truro College) each also fired on goal. Lawrence ended the night with four saves, including some big ones in the second half, to bring his season total to 20.
